Saffron is a subtropical plant and grows well in places with mild winters and hot and dry summers. Saffron is highly resistant to cold, but because its growth period coincides with autumn, winter and early spring and requires good and moderate weather. During the dormant or dormant summer period, rain or irrigation is harmful to it, so its cultivation is not common in the southern regions of the country.
Suitable time for planting saffron:
The suitable season for planting saffron is from August to October. After planting saffron bulbs in the ground, there is no need to replant saffron in the following years, and saffron bulbs remain in the ground for 4-7 years and in some areas for up to 10 years.
Saffron onion planting operation:
To plant saffron onions, dig a hole in a row with a shovel and put 15-3 onions in each hole. When planting onions, the heads should be facing upwards and plant them at a depth of 15-20 cm, because in this case, the onions will be protected from cold and frost in winter and will be protected from heat and other environmental stresses in summer. .
To plant saffron, 4 or 5 people are needed, so that one person digs the holes with a shovel, and two people choose the cultivable onions in groups of 3 to 5 or 15.
The fourth person puts the onions in the holes and the work continues in the same way until it is finished. Then, with a shovel or trowel, the surface of the uneven field is smoothed and compacted so that the onions stick to the soil. Then they leave the land until the autumn irrigation and before watering, they spread 10-20 tons of completely rotten animal manure in the land. After planting saffron, the grooves are covered with a trowel.
