Okra Cultivation E-Learning
Virtual okra farming training has been created for people to become fully acquainted with okra farming. Okra is a plant from the cheese family that is mostly grown in the tropics and the cold will reduce the yield of okra. Okra is an annual plant with herbaceous stems, which gradually becomes semi-woody. This plant is rich in folic acid, vitamins A and C. It is also a good source of B vitamins, magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber.
Okra is grown after the weather warms up. Transplanting is not common in this plant, but it can be grown both as a seedling and directly in the mainland. Before sowing, the seeds are soaked in water for 24 hours to facilitate germination. Okra seeds are sown in rows 120 to 150 cm apart. The distance between two plants on the planting rows varies between 30 to 90 cm, which depends on the type of cultivar (dwarf and tall) of the plant. The seeds are placed at a depth of 1 to 1.5 cm in the soil. Okra seeds do not germinate well, so more seeds are planted at shorter distances, then the extra bushes are thinned. The germination period is set at 12-20 days. Seed consumption per hectare is between 1.5-3 kg.
Suitable conditions for cultivation:
Okra is a thermophilic plant that grows best in southern climates and in medium to loamy sandy soils with good drainage. The soil should be rich in organic matter with a pH between 5.8 and 6.8. When planting in clay soils, transplanting is recommended because seed germination in heavy clay soils is difficult.
Plants should be grown in an area that receives at least 8 hours of sunlight a day. Okra grows better at high temperatures. The minimum soil temperature for okra to grow should be 18.3 ° C (65 ° F). Optimal plant growth occurs at soil temperatures between 23.9 and 32.3 ° C.
