Chickpeas are scientifically known as Cicer aritinum. This genus belongs to the family (Fabaceae). Its English name is (Chickpea). Pea (arietinum.C) is one of the first legumes to be domesticated in the ancient world. Chickpeas most likely originated in southeastern Turkey and neighboring areas in Syria. In this area, three annual species of the wild genus (Cicer) have been found that are closely related to field chickpeas. The name (Cicer) is of Latin origin and is probably derived from the Indo-European language word Kickere used by the early Greeks. Evidence shows that large, cream-colored chickpeas were imported to India via Afghanistan two centuries ago, which is why they are known as Kabuli chickpeas in India and other parts of the world. Seed and black pea varieties are known as local chickpeas (Desi).
