Hazelnut Grower E-Learning

Virtual hazelnut cultivation training has been created for people to become fully acquainted with hazelnut cultivation. Hazelnut is a shrub 1.5 meters high that grows to a height of 6 to 7 meters (sometimes more) in favorable places and easily creates a dense forest. The hazelnut tree has broad, pointed leaves with two rows of teeth, green in color and flowers on both males and females. The male of these flowers has 3 to 8 flags and its collection appears as hanging spikes in autumn. The fruit, called the hazelnut, is freshly covered with a green coating, but gradually separates after drying. The word hazelnut can be derived from the Greek word ποντικόν (κάριον) or from the Persian word ben tuk (empty).

Hazelnut reproduction:

  • Sex (with seeds):
Hazelnut is propagated by seeds like most fruit trees. Propagated by seed by planting hazelnuts immediately after harvest along with pericarp greatly reduces germination. Removing the seed coat, like removing the pericarp, increases germination by 81%. Seed dormancy resolves with a stratification period of 6 months. If the hazelnut is harvested late (end of September), the pericarp of the fruits will harden. In this case, first a period of hot stratification at 20 ° C is necessary. After that, hazelnut seeds should be exposed to a cold period (4 ° C).
  • The method of asexual (vegetative) reproduction is practical and easier:
1- Cuttings: Cuttings are branches that are formed from misplaced root buds and to propagate hazelnuts, the soil at the base of the tree can be removed and these branches can be separated and planted in the desired location.

2- Sleeping: Sowing hazelnuts is done in two ways: dormant and heap dormancy, and in both methods, first, the seedlings that we choose as the mother base should be removed from the soil surface in the first year, and by soiling the foot of the plant. We grow the roots and plant them in the main place.

3- Hazelnut, like other fruit trees, can be propagated by grafting modified cultivars on native and improved rootstocks, and for transplanting, different types of bud transplants can be used. If they have, they will produce good fruit.
