Planting Almonds E-Learning

Almond virtual training has been created for people to be fully acquainted with almonds. Almond is one of the deciduous perennial woody plants that is often seen as a tree and in wild species as a shrub. The height of almond trees reaches 6-8 meters, but in dryland conditions, the growth of trees is low and rarely reaches this height.

Almond is a tree that grows well in Mediterranean climates and in areas with hot, dry summers and mild winters. But almonds are grown in areas with cold winters to meet the need for cold.

Almond environmental requirements:
weather :
Optimal environmental conditions are essential for success in almond cultivation. Temperature is the most important climatic factor for almond cultivation. Almonds need moderate winter cold (500-100 hours at temperatures below 7 ° C) for uniform germination in spring. Its resistance to winter cold is moderate. (Less than peach fruit) Almond blossoms open earlier in the spring than other fruits except for hazelnuts. Therefore, they are very sensitive to late spring cold. Almonds need 6-8 months of the growing season to ripen their fruits and they want hot and dry weather in summer.

Soil:
The most suitable soils for almonds are loamy soils. But due to the fact that almond trees are often planted in infertile soils. Therefore, soil decomposition should be done before planting to determine the extent of nutrient deficiency. Leaf analysis is also useful for determining the amount and type of soil nutrients.

Planting:
Seedlings or grafted annual or perennial seedlings that have mature wood and healthy roots. They are planted in autumn and winter. Soils prepared with organic fertilizer are suitable for this purpose. The best time to plant is between early November to early January. The planting distance of trees varies depending on the cultivar, rootstock, soil fertility and irrigation system. The planting distance of 5.5 meters seems to be the best distance for cultivars grafted on peach seed or peach almond root. Preparations before planting. An effective windbreak must be created before planting almond trees.

wATERING systems :
Irrigation is one of the most important operations of almond trees and improves growth and increases yield because the amount of rainfall in summer in almond growing areas is not enough. The quality of irrigation is also very important. Water that contains a lot of salt, especially in shallow clay soils should not be Used for irrigation. Almond trees should not be irrigated by sprinklers because almond leaves are very sensitive to salt. Common irrigation methods for almond trees are surface irrigation and drip irrigation. Drip irrigation is commonly used on uneven ground.
