Virtual psychoanalysis training is an intimate partnership in which the patient discovers the underlying sources of the problem. This process is done not only mentally but also emotionally – by re-experiencing them with a psychoanalyst. Typically, the patient visits 4 or 5 times a week and lies on a psychoanalytic bed. He tries to share everything he can think of. These conditions create an analytical atmosphere that allows the emergence of parts of the mind that are not accessible by other observational methods.
As the patient speaks, hints from subconscious sources of his or her discomfort through a particular repetitive pattern of behavior that the patient finds difficult to talk about. The patient’s relationship with the psychoanalyst gradually becomes apparent. The psychoanalyst helps the patient to clarify these sources, and the patient refines, corrects, refutes, and adds his or her feelings and thoughts to what the psychoanalyst is saying.
During the years that psychoanalysis continues, the patient wrestles with these insights and experiences, revisits them over and over again with the psychoanalyst, and experiences them in his or her daily life, imagination, and dreams. The patient and the psychoanalyst work together to not only change crippling life patterns and eliminate debilitating symptoms but also to develop freedom to work and love. At the end of treatment, the patient’s life will have a profound and lasting change in behavior, communication, and sense.
